Add Performance with a High-Quality Exhaust System

One factor to consider when purchasing an aftermarket exhaust system is material. Most factory exhaust systems are made from lighter steel, resulting in faster deterioration over time. Installing a high-quality exhaust system made from aluminized or stainless steel will offer your system more longevity.
Pipe shapes are another feature to factor into your purchase decision. There are a couple different bends and sizes to examine:
- Crush Bend - Pipes have a crinkled area which lessens the diameter and slows the gases.
- Mandrel Bend - Pipes are smooth and one consistent diameter. Less resistance means more productive airflow.
Most cars and trucks benefit from larger pipes; however, if you opt for a pipe that’s too big, you can actually hinder your vehicle's performance. (One exception to this rule: If you’re adding a turbocharger or supercharger, you'll want to go significantly larger than your stock exhaust.)
Here are the main reasons to get a new exhaust system:
- Remove restrictions. When your exhaust pipe is bent properly, exhaust flows freely away from your engine, giving it more power and torque.
- Amplify sound. One of the quickest and most noticeable effects of a new exhaust system is the sound. That distinct rumble will be recognized anywhere you go.
- Increase diameter. Pipes larger in diameter allow for better air flow, increasing performance and efficiency.
- Improve looks. Car enthusiasts will see and hear your high-quality exhaust system right away.
Before you install a new exhaust system into your vehicle, understand they aren’t right for all cars. If a vehicle has a smaller engine, installing a new exhaust system will only make the car louder, not increase the power. High-quality exhaust systems are best for cars with larger engines, such as a V8 or turbocharged engine.
Be sure to do your research to find out if your vehicle is a good match for an exhaust system.
